You can install whichever version you want, even both of them as they do not conflict (you would need to make registration key request from each one separately). If you are using laptop with some power saving options turned on or even desktop computer with many USB devices, USB communication can get problematic causing programming errors you experienced. You may try to remove unnecessary USB devices from your computer while programming, and see if that helps...
