Onboard diagnostics (OBD) is an automotive term that refers to a vehicle's self-diagnostic and reporting capability. Thanks to the OBD systems, the vehicle owners, and repair technicians have access to the status of the various vehicle subsystems.

Onboard diagnostics (OBD)
Automotive diagnostic systems are around since the late 60s. In 1968 Volkswagen introduced the first onboard computer system with scanning capability, in their fuel-injected Type 3 models.
Early versions of OBD would simply illuminate a malfunction indicator light if a problem was detected but would not provide any additional information. Luckily, modern OBD systems use a standardized digital communications port to provide real-time data in addition to a standardized series of diagnostic trouble codes, or DTCs, which allow for rapid identification of malfunctions within the vehicle.
