Ping From Microcontroller

I have the Ethernet example using an STM32F107VC microcontroller working in that after configuration, I can ping it from the host PC. Actually, just initializing it makes that work - no big deal. My problem is that I need the microcontroller to be able to initiate a ping to see if the host is alive (I'm making an Ethernet testing device). I cannot find information on how to make that work. There isn't a simple "Ethernet_Intern_Ping" function in the library. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
