About FAT32

hi,
I fail to understand the logic behind the FAT32:
you can use it with SD card or with USB stick.
How does the driver "know" on which storage to implement the functions?
Actually, I need to copy files from SD card to USB stick. any idea how should this task be implemented?
Code fragments will be appreciated.
