USB virgin pic18f4550

I have a virgin pic18f4550 for a project, I am using the mikroc compiler.
Looking through the forums I see many have had similar problems with usb connection issues.
Can I confirm I need to have a bootloader installed on my target pic to use the mikroc usb examples.
