Make your own DAB+ digital radio with GLCD idea

#1 Post by chris11jed » 14 Apr 2016 11:17

Ok so I'm thinking big (for me at least) but maybe there's someone out there that understands how this could be done.

I have a small digital radio. It has a simple small GLCD screen. It shows the station name and frequency. Down below this scrolling across the screen is the artist name and song title. I love this little digital radio, but the scroll of artist and song takes for ever. I have always thought, if I could just build my own with a bigger screen that has more character space, then the most important info wouldn't need to be scrolled so slowly. It would just be there. Yes I could just buy one that does this, but where's the learning, the fun in making?

Would (or could) MikroElektronika ever bring out a series of click boards that pick up digital radio signals and/or help with the decoding of a digital radio signal? And maybe there's a smart cookie out there to write up a library? God knows I'm not that good. I have enough trouble finding decent information on what makes up the signals. I have found that there's a mix of music and text, hence that's why there's music and artist/song info. But what format does this take? MP3 and ASCII? I don't know. So that's why I thought to post this. It's just a wish. And yes it's a bit more complex than making a few LEDs blink, well it's a hell of a lot more complex. But let's dream big forum users and MikroE team. Let's dream big...

Over to you guys. Any ideas?

Thanks
Chris

Hello,

Thank you for sharing your ideas with us.

MikroE team has thought about it, we were preparing the "Let's make" project that would do similar thing.
It is still in the process of development, since our interns were working on it.

In the meantime, you can take advice from other users, if you don't want to make it yourself.
You can check out some of our click boards that you can get the idea to work with your project:

Biljana

Hi Biljana,

Thanks for your reply.

That's great news the team at MikroElektronika are looking into digital radio. Those interns are taking on a good cause there :D

Thank you for including the links to all those add on click and add on boards. I didn't realize that there's an FM board. Will be looking into that. But there you go, this FM click board looks desperately lonely  it needs a brother/sister in the form of a DAB+ click. Of course that might be just another FM click that searches DAB+ bands (my little digital radio says DAB+ frequencies are 174.0 to 239.0MHz) And the decoding into listenable music done with some of the other clicks you linked to...

Again thanks for the insight and your time. Best of luck to the interns

Chris
