You’ve asked for a battery charger on a click board and now you’ve got one. Pretty fast response time, we’d say.
Frankly, it’s more of a nifty coincidence but a welcome one none the less. Last week we asked what sort of clicks boards you’d like to see this year, and several people asked for a battery charger. Such a click was scheduled for imminent release anyhow, so we figured why not speed things up.
Charger click is a battery charger for single cell Li-Ion and Li-Polymer batteries.
It carries two main chips: a MCP73831 charge controller from Microchip and a DS2438 smart charge monitor from Maxim.
This smart monitor gives you precise control over the charging process. It integrates a temperature sensor, a timer, an ADC to measure the battery voltage and current, as well as a current accumulator that monitors the total amount of current going in and out of the battery.

Additionally, it also has 40 bytes of EEPROM for storing parameters specific for a given battery.
The charge controller lets you control the charge current in the range from 15 mA to 500 mA. Voltage can be set to be either 4.2V, 4.35V or 4.5V.
