The reasoning behind releasing so many RTC clicks might have been obscure. It should be apparent now that we’re releasing a universal RTC library, courtesy of our firmware department.
The newly released RTC library is a single library that covers all RTC clicks that use I2C. The same set of functions enable you to work with four different chips (on RTC click, RTC2, RTC3, and now RTC6)
Those include setting GMT time or local time, calculating UNIX timestamps both for local and GMT, setting square wave outputs, checking for power failure and more (of course not all chips have the same capabilities so not all functions will be available on all of those clicks).
Most of them will on RTC6, though. This one carries Microchip’s MCP79410 Real-Time Clock/Calendar IC. It has a multifunctional pin MFP that allows you to configure alarms, square wave outputs, or use it as a general purpose output. MCP79410 also has 64 bytes of battery-backed SRAM, a kilobit of EEPROM, and additional 64 bits of protected EEPROM that requires an unlock sequence (it can be used for storing a unique ID for example)
In the future, we will also incorporate the 1-Wire and SPI RTC clicks as well.
We want to offer you comprehensive compilers. In addition to adding support for new MCUs, we’re enhancing the support for various peripheral chips as well.
Real time clocks may not be particularly exciting, but they are the silent workhorses that make a lot of other things possible by keeping track of time even when the main supply is down.
Hence, you should have a choice of different RTCs for your project. Download the library from Libstock.
