Have you ever wondered what it’s like to have a summer internship at MikroElektronika? How many interns we have? What sort of projects are they working on?

We thought that since our intern lab is full, it was a good chance to give you a nice overview on how they are spending their time.

The industrial design duo from Belgrade is sitting at the round table, like the knights of Camelot. Except they don’t have any armor or swords (as far as we know).

Today they were learning how to make product images for the website. Some of our click boards™ to be precise. The whole process, from getting the click board out of the box, to photographing it and making it the right size as all the others in the range.

But first, we had a chat about what click boards™ are, what they can be used for and what the ones they are photographing do.

Our internship programs last from two weeks, to three months, depending on the requirements of the university and college the people are attending, or the time a person decides to commit to a project.

And on the other side of the office, below the colorful world map, we have six-member team of future engineers from France. They are as charming as the stereotype claims.

They all come from the ISEN University in Toulon, on the Mediterranean coast, and they are staying with us for two months. So, enough time to make some good friendships.

We asked Adrien, you see in the image above, what he thinks about his time here. As an answer, we got a rather shy smile and these words: “it is amazing here.”

He is setting up the SpeakUp click on one of our development boards, to make the light bulb change colors to his voice commands. It was a fun side project to help the design team with the product images.

But it’s not all work and no play. Everyone likes to relax after work, and the interns are no exception.

Take a look how you can make a weather station at home, with the help of Weather click and SparkFun’s ESP8266 Thing.

Keep track of the changing degrees and get precise info, instead of waiting for the weather channel to tell you.

Weather click

Weather click carries BME280 integrated environmental unit from Bosch. It’s a sensor that detects humidity, pressure, and temperature, specifically designed for low current consumption and long-term stability. Those features make it ideal for applications like home automation control, personalized weather stations, sport and fitness tools and so on.

The sensor has three operating modes: sleep, forced, and normal. Also, the humidity and pressure sensors can operate independently.

Don’t let the twisted design of the click board™ twist your perception, RS485 2 click is intended for high-speed bidirectional data communication on multipoint bus transmission lines.

RS485 2 click

RS485 2 click carries the MAX3471 half-duplex transceiver intended for lithium battery-powered RS-485/RS-422 applications. The click is designed to run on either 3.3V or 5V power supply. It communicates with the target microcontroller over UART interface with additional functionality provided by the following pins on the mikroBUS™ line: PWN, CS.

The MAX3471 draws only 1.6µA (typical) supply current from a 3.6V supply with the receiver enabled and the driver disabled.

RS485 click boards™ in the shop

RS485 click 5V – carries the ADM485 differential line transceiver from Analog Devices. It is designed for balanced data transmission and complies with EIA standards RS-485 and RS-422. The click is designed to run on a 5V power supply.

RS485 click 3.3V – carries the SN65HVD12 half-duplex, RS-485 transceiver from Texas Instruments.

RS485 Isolator click – an RS485 communication isolator, and carries the ADM2682EBRIZ, a 5 kV rms signal and power isolated RS-485 transceiver.

RS485 communication

RS485 communication has really good network topology. Which is probably the reason why it is a favorite amongst developers when they are working on data acquisition and control apps. RS485 has the ability to work with multiple transmitters and receivers in one network.

Small DC motors are used everywhere around you – in fans, toy cars, vending machines, power tools, electric toothbrushes, and more. If you are planning a project similar to some of these devices, you need a DC motor driver. Good thing that DC MOTOR 5 click is available in the shop.

DC MOTOR 5 click

DC MOTOR 5 click carries the DRV8701 brushed DC motor gate driver from Texas Instruments. The click is designed to run on an external power supply. It communicates with the target MCU over the following pins on the mikroBUS™ line: AN, RST, CS, PWM, and INT.

The click is capable of driving motors from 5.9V to 45V.

World’s first electric motor

1828 was the year the world saw the first practical electric motor. Hungarian inventor Ányos István Jedlík called it an “electromagnetic self-rotor“. It was the first continuously rotating electric motor, and it had all the components of a DC motor (a stator, rotor, and commutator).

His invention remained hidden from the rest of the world for more than 15 years, so it had no real influence on the development of motors of today. The rotating electric motor of Moritz Jacobi in 1834 was the real start.

We have a new motor driver in the shop, and if you are imagining a click board™ riding a motorcycle no one can blame you.

DC MOTOR 4 click has two pairs of screw terminals onboard. One for connecting a DC motor, and the other one for connecting an external power source, if it’s necessary.

DC MOTOR 4 click

DC MOTOR 4 click is capable of driving motors with a voltage range from 4.5V and 36V. It carries the MAX1480 motor driver from Maxim Integrated. The click is designed to run on either 3.3V or 5V power supply.

You can use it in robotics, or home automation projects, or for small toys and gadgets. Really, it’s up to you.

Right after 6LoWPAN C click, and 6LoWPAN T click we have a development board in the shop, to end the working week on a high note – 6LoWPAN clicker. The onboard 2.4 GHz RF transceiver allows you to add wireless communication to your project.

This development board is small enough that you can carry it anywhere with you, like a keychain, or a pack of gum. With two battery slots at the back or the clicker, you can power it on the go (with two standard AAA batteries).

Considering that we have more than 300 click boards™ in our range, you can add any sort of functionality on top of the ones the 6LoWPAN clicker already has. Add a temperature and humidity sensor, LED rings, a digital compass, or a motion detection sensor. Did you know that we even have a click that can detect lightning? 6LoWPAN clicker is a compact development board with a mikroBUS™ socket for click board connectivity. It carries Microchip’s PIC32MX470F512H – 120 MHz/150 DMIPS, MIPS32® M4K® core microcontroller. And CA-8210 2.4GHz ISM band transceiver.

The board features everything you need to get started: a micro USB connector, two LEDs, and push buttons, ON/OFF switch, and headers for interfacing with external electronics.

6LoWPAN clicker has a PICkit™ connector on the right side of the board, for Microchip’s Debugger/Programmer.
