my lcd cannot just light

hello there i have connected an LCD to pic18f4550 mcu's portd.i have left D0 to D3 floating and my lcd has failed even to show the smallest light.any1 to help me.any problem leaving those data lines floating?

its now displaying my text but now the back light is still off

Please, see page 22 of the EasyPIC7 manual to see proper connection of the Lcd with the backlight :

well thanx bt i got it working by connecting positive supply to pin 16 and ground to pin 15 which is the opposite to what the datasheet says
