HDD disk drive motor controler board

#1 Post by joseLB » 29 Aug 2014 00:35

Hi ME Team

Any of your boards can control a Hard Disk Drive spindle motor?´

If not, this can be a suggestion for a future Click board or whatever, as, most of us has a bunch of broken/old HDD, and, they spindle motor is very interesting for many applications, if we can control their speed, etc.

If not, do you know a driver Project for one HDD motor?

Regards
Jose

Hi,

Thank you for participating in the improvement of our products, I'll pass your suggestion to our development team.

For now you can see our existing motor driver boards:

STEPPER click

DC MOTOR click

Bipolar Stepper Motor Driver Board

At a first look, seems that the above controlers do not control directly na HDD motor. It´s correct?

I googled a lot for a HDD driver circuit, asked at many forums with no result.

My suggestion is that it would be something very simple for the PIC, something that we could:
1- start/stop motor
2- define direction
3- define speed
One concern into using the serial interface is that normaly it´s used for other communications, for example, PIC <->PC.

So, routines similarstep click could be a good solution, with the minimum use of ports, of course.

Hi,

I already forwarded your suggestion to our development team for spindle motor.

In your design and project you can use UART communication between MCU and PC, I do not see problem in that.

Please visit Libstock web site at http://www.libstock.com and see this project:

Only thing to note is that my suggestion is that they preferably do not use serial communications, to leave it for other purposes. And that they use some pic pins for the interface

Hi Jose,

It is not a problem, a lots of MCUs has more then one UART, also you can use USB.

Best regards,
Peter
